Dogs are social animals, and a well-trained dog is generally well-behaved when meeting strangers. But it helps to follow a few basic steps when approaching any dog you haven’t met before.

First, ask the owner if it’s okay to greet the dog. Then, so as not to be intimidating, bend to one knee beyond reach of the dog. Remember: size matters, and you are a big presence. Do not stare directly at the dog, either. And if you have a hat or sunglasses that may spook the pup, remove them slowly. Then, if all is going well, extend the back of a closed hand so the dog can sniff you. Once mutual contact is established, some gentle scratches under the chin and chest will help you make fast friends with your new acquaintance.
